Our GRP enclosures are no exception; they’re durable, versatile, and perfect for applications across a wide range of sectors and industries. This week, we’re taking a quick look at the capabilities of the GRP enclosures we have in stock at LED Controls, and why they’re so popular with our customers!
What is a GRP enclosure?
A GRP enclosure is essentially a tough plastic box used to house sensitive components (normally electrical components) from outside hazards and contaminants. GRP is a technical abbreviation that’s short for Glass Reinforced Plastic, a material that’s made by combining fibreglass with a polymer resin. This process effectively makes the plastic a lot stronger, enabling it to withstand the pressures of even the most intensive environments.
As you’d expect, that durability is one of its defining qualities, and GRP as a material is typically used for making boat hulls, as well as for various construction and industrial applications. As well as being notably rugged, GRP is also highly resistant against water and dust, which is a particularly handy attribute that makes them useful for protecting vulnerable electrical components, whether that’s from specific on-site risks, or more general hazards such as rain, snow or hail.
In addition to offering great protection from the elements and casual wear and tear, GRP is also excellent for shielding components from theft or vandalism, especially in industries where these components may be particularly valuable (or at least perceived to be), such as in railways or infrastructure.
GRP enclosures can generally be expected to last a couple of decades, although obviously their exact lifespan is dependent on their environment and application.
