When it comes to industrial automation, one of the key elements to ensuring the continued success of any operation is to ensure that key components are reliably protected from environmental hazards. That helps to guarantee minimum downtime and maximum productivity.

One notable solution that has been growing increasingly popular with our customers here at LED Controls is the nVent AFS enclosure range. These stainless steel enclosures are designed with an integrated sloping roof and a high IP 66 protection degree, making them a robust choice for challenging environments. This week, we’re taking a closer look at some of their key characteristics, and what they can do for you.

What are nVent AFS enclosures? The basics

The nVent AFS enclosure range consists of stainless steel, single-door, wall-mounted enclosures. They are designed with an integrated sloping roof that provides a high level of protection against environmental factors. The key feature is the enclosures' IP 66 protection rating, which means they are dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets. This makes them suitable for environments where dust and moisture are prevalent.

Examining the nVent AFS enclosures in a little more detail

The enclosures in the AFS range can be easily distinguished by a couple of core technical details. They’re generally constructed from either AISI 304L or AISI 316L pre-grained stainless steel, offering durability and resistance to harsh conditions. Their characteristic sloping roof is angled between 8 to 20 degrees and includes a 10 mm overhang to channel water and debris away from the front door, preventing the risk of ingress.

Moving on to the door itself; it’s a robust, corner-formed, one-piece design that opens 130 degrees, supported by concealed AISI 304 stainless steel hinges with a captive pin. Sealing is achieved with an injected polyurethane gasket for AISI 304L models and an injected silicone gasket for AISI 316L models.

Additionally, the enclosures feature a mounting plate made from 2.5 mm galvanised steel, and they’re fitted with M8 press-welded studs. This allows for easy installation of internal components. The lock is a Zamak double-bit 3 mm type with 90-degree movement (though other locks are available). The enclosures are delivered complete with a door, mounting plate, metallic key, and mounting accessories.

5 key advantages of the nVent AFS enclosure range

Reliable protection

The nVent AFS enclosures provide exceptional reliability thanks to their IP 66 protection rating. This ensures that the enclosures are both dust-tight and capable of withstanding powerful water jets, making them ideal for environments where exposure to moisture and dust is a significant concern. This high level of protection reduces the risk of component failure and helps to maintain operational efficiency.

Robust construction

Constructed from high-quality AISI 304L or AISI 316L stainless steel, the AFS enclosures are built to withstand harsh conditions. The choice between these grades allows for selection based on the specific environmental demands, such as exposure to corrosive substances. The stainless steel construction not only enhances durability but also offers resistance to physical damage.

Efficient design

The integrated sloping roof is a key feature that contributes to the efficiency of the AFS enclosures. By channelling water and debris away from the front door, the sloping roof prevents ingress and reduces the need for additional maintenance. This design feature streamlines installation and ensures that the enclosures remain clean and functional, even in challenging environments.

Versatile application

The nVent AFS enclosures are versatile and can be used in a wide range of industries, including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and other environments with stringent cleanliness requirements. The high level of protection and robust construction make them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, accommodating various environmental conditions and operational needs.

Cost-effective installation

The design of the AFS enclosures helps to reduce installation time and labour costs. Features such as the laser-marked mounting points and pre-assembled components simplify the installation process. The absence of gland openings as standard ensures a high level of integrity, while the inclusion of mounting accessories means that the enclosures are ready for immediate use upon delivery.
